Discover a Place Rich in History and Timeless Charm
Take a self-guided journey through one of Waikato’s most treasured heritage destinations. Step back in time and uncover the stories, people, and memories that have shaped Woodlands Estate, a significant part of Gordonton’s history for over 150 years.
Woodlands is a garden of rare historic and landscape significance. The Homestead is recognised as a Category 1 Historic Place by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and remains one of the region’s most important heritage buildings.
Established in 1870 as the centre of a vast 98,000-acre farming enterprise, Woodlands played an important role in New Zealand’s agricultural history, including the export of some of the country’s earliest butter under the Anchor brand. The striking neo-Gothic Homestead was built in 1875, with many of the estate’s notable trees planted shortly afterwards. Camellias imported from England are among the oldest in New Zealand, while the magnificent tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), eucalypts, and plane trees have grown to impressive proportions, creating a landscape of remarkable beauty and character.
The formal Long Lawn, framed by copper beech hedges and displaying the New Zealand flag, provides a peaceful contrast to the extensive woodland gardens. At the heart of the estate lies a large water feature crossed by a wisteria-draped, Monet-inspired bridge, one of the garden’s most photographed and admired features. Together, these elements create an atmospheric setting rich in heritage, beauty, and tranquillity.
Also located within the Estate is the privately operated Garden Grove Café & Bar, where visitors can enjoy refreshments while overlooking the historic cricket oval and surrounding gardens.
Today, Woodlands Estate is owned and managed by the Waikato District Council, which is responsible for preserving and enhancing this important heritage destination for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. The Estate continues to provide opportunities for recreation, education, events, and connection with the region’s rich history.
Whether you are exploring the gardens, discovering the stories of the Homestead, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk through the grounds, Woodlands Estate offers a unique glimpse into New Zealand’s past in a setting of exceptional natural beauty.
