Pōhutukawa House
★★★★★
A city garden planned and planted simultaneously with the building of the house to create an integrated whole. The spatial layout and planting design make the most of an awkward section shape which has varying depths out from the house. Using a balance of formal structure and informal elements it incorporates clipped forms to frame views with contrasting looser foliage.
Starting at the street, the long drive leads to an entry courtyard and through a gate in a wall to the main garden where a succession of spaces express different characters and moods.
There are structured and semi-formal areas designed to be seen from the house, and an area of ‘sub-tropical jungle’ on and beneath a huge pohutukawa where ferns, bromeliads, and orchids are grown to create a naturalistic environment.
The garden offers a harmonious and cohesive display of diverse plants, captivating horticultural vignettes, and intricate details that engage the eye and hold the visitor’s attention.
It incorporates an immense variety of unusual and rarely seen plants, in a playful planting design where colour combinations are carefully considered. Included are a considerable variety of bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and foliage begonias
Although small the garden has considerable complexity and all visits will be conducted. Visitors will have ample time to ask questions.
