Welton House
★★★★★
Set on a remnant coastal sand dune, the garden occupies one of the highest points on the property, with expansive views across the Wairau Valley to the Richmond Ranges. The homestead was built on the dune in 1901 to avoid flooding from the Wairau and Ōpaoa Rivers. The ancient landform still underpins the garden, creating a mosaic of growing conditions that range from exceptionally free-draining to seasonally wet.
Layered native forest, dry gardens, a wild grass House Paddock, extensive mixed borders, vertical plantings and productive spaces sit alongside a working farm and vineyard. The mixed borders are underpinned by strong structure and succession planting. Biodiversity enhancement and habitat creation extend throughout the garden and into the wider farm and vineyard landscape.
Sculptural topiary and substantial timber elements bring definition and scale. The clipped forms echo the profile of the Richmond Ranges, while oversized steps, platforms and pergolas anchor the garden within the landscape.
Fruit and vegetables remain an important part of the garden, continuing a long tradition of productivity on the fertile Wairau Plains.
Tour alone or guided and allow at least an hour. Large groups are easily accommodated and catering from a private chef can be arranged whether it be morning teas, afternoon teas, lunches, picnics etc.
