Red Sheds

★★★★★

THE RED SHED GARDEN. WHERE STRUCTURE MEETS WHIMSEY.

Two years young but in garden years already a precocious beauty. Red Sheds was imagined, designed and continues to be created with simplicity in mind. Where a thorough understanding of structure replaces high maintenance. Every space must earn its keep, always in proportion and with attention to scale.

The Garden is an orchestrated sequence of spaces from the openness of the road landscape, under the sheltering canopy of mature Pin oaks, through a courtyard of smaller trees and topiaried shrubs, along a path framed by pleached Pyrus hedges to the house and its adjoining hedged and enclosed garden spaces and finally opening out to the vastness of the Wairarapa sky and countryside.

Hedging creates the quiet background. Unobtrusive Fagus sylvatica, Laurus nobilus and a palette of various buxus varieties divide the spaces with trees and topiary taking and adding form. Light and shadow live here, sparring throughout the seasons and time of day. Lush and green during both spring and summer, giving way to a smelter of rusts glowing in autumn. Then, there is the HA HA, an architectural illusion allowing, even encouraging, stock to graze close without gaining unwelcome access. Red Sheds has been built and the gardens developed, for the evolving needs of age. Enjoyment outweighs effort.
