Oasis Cottage
★★★
Nestled beneath the watchful presence of Mt Oxford in North Canterbury, Oasis Cottage is a five-acre country garden surrounding a historic 1898 homestead. Created almost entirely by owners Laurie and Steph over many years, it combines formal structure with abundant seasonal planting to create a garden that feels both beautifully designed and deeply lived in.
Every path reveals a different experience. Traditional clipped hedging frames colourful perennial borders, while productive spaces—including a classic vegetable allée, heirloom orchard, arboretum and extensive cut-flower gardens—celebrate the beauty of plants that are both ornamental and useful. The much-loved Blue Garden features sixteen raised beds filled with carefully curated planting combinations that change continually throughout the year.
From intimate enclosed spaces to broad views towards Mt Oxford, the garden unfolds as a series of connected rooms, each with its own character. Carefully clipped hedging provides structure throughout the year, while generous planting ensures there is always something new to discover as the seasons progress.
One of Oasis Cottage’s most distinctive features is Atelier Florale, Steph’s charming floral studio and adjoining greenhouse. Built by Laurie as a labour of love, it reflects the couple’s shared passion for growing flowers from seed to bouquet. Seasonal blooms grown throughout the garden are gathered and transformed into natural, European-inspired floral designs, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the art of garden-led floristry.
Oasis Cottage is a garden that never stands still. Recent additions include The Pavilion, a peaceful destination overlooking the arboretum, and the developing Hidden Valley, where a more natural planting style is gradually taking shape. Returning visitors will always find something new to explore.
More than simply a collection of beautiful plants, Oasis Cottage is a personal garden shaped by imagination, craftsmanship and years of dedication. Visitors are warmly welcomed on selected open days and by appointment to explore at their own pace, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and experience a garden that continues to grow and mature with every passing season.
