Broadfield Garden, located a 20 minute drive from Christchurch, is a private New Zealand designed landscape garden of around 3.5 hectares, established in the early 1990s. Over more than 30 years it has become a place of inspiration, restraint, originality, and exceptional care.
What Makes Broadfield Special?
Design & Planting: A blend of formal and informal styles, with New Zealand natives playing a central role. These are combined with New Zealand–raised varieties of azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, and seasonal highlights such as peonies, daffodils, and lilies.
Hedges & Borders: Around 1.5 kilometres of tōtara hedges, along with other species, frame and define the garden, creating rhythm, shelter, and structure.
Forest and Native Specimens: A young kauri forest with more than 100 kauri trees, alongside a wide range of native forest trees, shrubs, climbers, and ferns. A large beech forest also features prominently.
Garden Rooms & Features: 16 distinct areas, each with its own character. Highlights include a 140-metre reflective canal, a 120-metre New Zealand border, a sedge pond, formal rose garden, viewing mound, cricket oval, and more.
Colour, Texture & Seasonal Interest: The garden offers changing delights through the year — spring blooms, textured foliage, sculptural form, and rare or unusual New Zealand species.
Visitors often remark on the sense of quiet, the flow between areas, and the way each section feels distinct yet part of a harmonious whole.
