Otari-Wilton's Bush Native Botanic Garden

Otari Native Botanic Garden and Wilton’s Bush Reserve is the only public botanic garden in New Zealand dedicated solely to native plants. The plant sanctuary and forest reserve consists of five hectares of plant collections. Some of Wellington’s oldest trees are here including 800 year old rimu. Around11km of walking tracks make it a popular haunt for family days out.

Government House Garden Wellington

Government House Garden Wellington

Government House in Wellington is a large two storey house and the residence of the Governor General. The grounds cover about 12 hectares, some of which is flat lawn or garden, the rest being steep hillside. Exotic species of trees are increasingly complemented by trees and shrubs native to New Zealand. There are also several heritage features throughout the grounds.

Wellington Botanic Garden

Wellington Botanic Garden features 25 hectares of unique landscape, protected native forest, conifers, specialised plant collections, colourful floral displays and views over Wellington. Visitors can enjoy glow worms in the Main Garden, public art, children’s play area, Botanic Garden Café located in the Lady Norwood Rose Garden and the Carter Observatory.

Though not a gardener herself, she was passionate about gardens and flowers and mentions them frequently in her writing.

Pepped Warbeck is the result of the passion and gardening experience of the owners, Fee and David. The garden has been developed from a bare paddock and spreads around the architecturally designed home. There is a wide range of plantings with a key feature being the large bog garden.

Named for the white-faced heron that returns to nest every year, Matuku has been developed over the last 15 years around a 100 year-old farm cottage.  It is a large garden of distinct garden spaces with varied and interesting planting.
