Waiongana Gardens (Private)
Just north of New Plymouth, John and Diana have transformed a 10 acre lifestyle block bound by the Waiongana River into a tranquil elegant working country garden. This has results in the property being voted as one of Taranaki’s most south after and unique wedding ceremony venues.
The absolute jewel in the crown of this property is the picturesque Mt Taranaki-fed river which promoted a mass planning of native tress as one of the first planting project undertaken. An easy flat river walk amongst the native trees creates a meandering and peaceful link between the garden and the river.
Strong creative design elements such as hand-crafted log wall created from the recycled Leighton’s Green shelter trees, Arts and Crafts styled building along with a variety of planting schemes all go towards making this a spectacular garden for all seasons.
There are multiple vistas, intersecting axes and pathways to explore through a mix of native and exotic trees, shrubs and hydrangeas, to name but a few, interspersed amongst more formal structured areas including the sunken garden, paeony parterre, rose garden and vibrant long borders.
Edible produce has not been overlooked in this garden – a citrus grove, apple tree alley, mature kiwifruit areas along with a bountiful fruit forest yielding buckets of gourmet produce such as tamarillos persimmons, feijoas and passionfruit.
Unique log-edged raised beds have created a large and productive potager style vegetable garden that is currently a work in progress.
