Gore Public Gardens (Public)

Located right in the centre of town, Gore Public Gardens host the annual Rhododendron Festival in October that attracts many visitors to enjoy the spring colour and visit the aviary, another feature of the Gardens. The original plantings have been complemented with more exotic trees, shrubs and rare conifers. Tree peonies are a popular addition to the garden.

This public garden has an interesting history. It was designed in 1906 by David Tannock, the horticulturist largely responsible for the noted Dunedin Botanic Garden. This historic park preserves his rather formal layout and a venerable Wellingtonia and two horizontal elms from his time. Some of the early conifers were rare at the time and are now of considerable size and interest.
