Butler Point has an interesting history and as well as lovely gardens. It hosts a comprehensive Whaling Museum and the historic Butler House. Although little of the original gardens remain there are significant pohutukawa trees and a large Magnolia grandiflora. One surviving pohutukawa apparently boasts the widest trunk in New Zealand being 11 metres in circumference.
