Winterhome (Private)

The homestead was established in 1939 with pohutukawa planted around it. Moreton Bay figs and ngaio were established to shelter the homestead with bougainvillea, hibiscus and jacaranda planted on the eastern frost-free side of the house. The lawn in front of the house is studded with old ngaio trees and falls abruptly at its edge to native bush below. Winterhome has been planned on classical French lines with intersecting cross axes creating unexpected views within the plantings of trees, shrubs and perennials emphasising the strong design element. A high brick wall encloses a canal garden. This leads to a formal box-edged rose garden planted entirely with Rosa 'Margaret Merrill'. Further out orange trees stand in a formal box-edged parterre. A swing bridge high above the entrance driveway leads to an avocado orchard and beyond that is a further mown area where visitors may admire the ocean view.
