Barewood Garden (Private)
Carolyn’s experience as a florist inspired her design creating a lush, colourful fragrant garden framing the 100 year old homestead that is the heart of Barewood.Located a pleasant 35 minute drive from Blenheim, Barewood has been developed within a framework of mature trees. A simple water feature greets visitors on arrival. The rambling century-old homestead with wide verandahs wreathed in wisteria and old-fashioned roses flows smoothly into colourful mixed borders and sweeping lawns. Interesting colour combinations using unusual herbaceous plants and shrubs can be seen in the different areas throughout the garden reflecting the owner’s background in floristry.
A hawthorn walk leads through a grassed meadow to a summer house and a small understated pond fringed with water-loving plants. A formal potager, enclosed by a hornbeam hedge, contains soft fruits, herbs, flowers and pears trained over canopies and provides a harvest all year round. An allée of Malus tschonoskii leads from the potager to box-edged herbaceous borders. The garden and garden structures at Barewood have been created to complement the house. Despite the often harsh climate there is something of interest to see throughout the seasons. This is a beautiful garden not to be missed.
