It is also home to New Zealand’s first traditional Maori garden showcasing traditional practices, materials and ceremonies relating to food production and storage.

Located just outside Otorohonga, Parkwood lies on gently sloping grounds overlooking the surrounding countryside. Perennials, roses and climbers are featured within the garden as well as many shrubs that love the Waikato climate. If heading to or from Waitomo this is a great stop to place on your itinerary.

Woodlands Homestead, Gardens & Function Centre

Woodlands is a treasured historic estate situated in the Waikato, only 10 minutes from Hamilton. The first plantings were made 135 years ago and add depth of maturity to the garden. The estate is home to some of the oldest and largest trees in New Zealand. Camellias are also planted extensively throughout the gardens.

Tapuwae Garden

Tapuwae Garden

Tapuwae is a Maori name meaning ‘sacred footstep’. The garden, covering 3 hectares, is sited more than 500m above sea level and has been developed by Howard and Doff since the 1960s. Rhododendrons and camellias are extensively planted as well as many maturing shrubs and trees. Ducks and peacocks rule the roost. Doff is a real plants person and loves to share her plant passion.
