Dunedin Botanic Garden

Dunedin’s Botanic Garden opened in 1863 and is the oldest in the country. From forested slopes to floral borders the garden presents a variety of settings hosting thousands of plants from New Zealand and overseas. There is a café and a beautiful Edwardian Winter Garden Glasshouse providing a tropical retreat.

Margaret Barker's family purchased the neglected castle and 14 hectare property in 1967. Visitors can enjoy a trip back in history, a ramble through a beautifully developed garden topped by an indulgent moment in the café. There is also a ‘tip of the hat’ from Margaret of her memories of reading to her children, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The owners of Hereweka Anne and Peter share a love of plants and the environment .Initially bare scrub land with one significant stand of rimu they have planted specimen trees, regenerated native bush and a fascinating Gondwana themed garden. Around the house the garden follows the contours of the land with terraces of perennial borders and a kitchen garden.

Lan Yuan - Dunedin Chinese Garden

Lan Yuan - Dunedin Chinese Garden was a gift to the city. It is to honour the past contributions the Chinese made to the settlement of Otago and the rest of New Zealand. Plantings were influenced by garden architects from Shanghai, planted and maintained with the influence of traditional Chinese culture and heritage.

Orokonui Ecosanctuary

Orokonui Ecosanctuary

The magical Orokonui Ecosanctuary forest showcases rare plants, diverse forest types, 450 year old podocarps, 100 varities of flax and New Zeland's tallest tree.Nestled between the mountains of Mihiwaka and Mopanui, 20 minutes north of Dunedin, is a beautiful  307ha forest protected by a special pest exclusion fence.
