Stoneycrop (Private)
Stoneycrop has been a garden in the making since 2014 when the new home was completed on the 3,600m2 site. Having an inner-city garden for many years, the 2011 Christchurch earthquake changed everything resulting in a new accessible home and garden. Helen was recognised for the huge amount of work in developing the garden and realising their joint vision with the winning of the 2015 Gardena NZ Gardener of the Year.
With an interest in rhododendrons, it is natural that this genus predominates. The garden has a large collection of NZ rhododendron hybrids as well as a selection of species and hybrids from alpines to giant leaved cultivars.
Trees have been planted for structure and shelter, magnolias, cornus and acers and others with good autumn colour. Interesting shrubs and perennials feature along with paeonies in the spring and lilies in summer.
The garden has wheelchair accessible paths and raised gardens in many areas including the vegetable garden. A fruit arbour of espaliered apples and pears provides abundant fruit.
A rill was built to be enjoyed from indoors with a planting of Cercis ‘Forest Pansy’, underplanted with tulips for spring colour and Perovskia ‘Blue Spike’ in summer.
The rock garden is planted with alpine rhododendrons, bulbs and choice plants.
Although a young garden development has been rapid with ample water and well enriched soil and planting has been undertaken to provide a succession of colour and interest through the seasons.
Stoneycrop is situated 15 minutes from Christchurch Airport.
