Fishermans Bay Garden (Private)

Fishermans Bay Garden is a haven in the rugged and dramatic landscape of the Banks Peninsula coastline. The structure and texture of New Zealand native plants combined with a diverse array of non-native plants are used create a truly New Zealand ambience. Winding paths and a varied landscape have inspired a garden with many parts, including a traditional flower border, herb garden, farm garden, fern garden, a shaded streamside valley and pond and a wild, exposed rock garden.

An extensive variety of locally sourced native plant species offer visitors a unique snapshot of the rich and varied plants of Banks Peninsula. The gardener is also a keen collector of native hebes, and the site currently boasts more than 150 species and cultivars.

The garden has been landscaped integrating the old shearing shed and other playful elements. One of these is ‘Herbina’ the corrugated cow that overlooks the bay and welcomes visitors to the garden. The Fishermans Bay Farm is just 20 minutes drive from the historic French settlement of Akaroa and includes more than 100 hectares of regenerating protected native bush in two coastal valleys. The garden is at its best in late spring and summer, though the strong focus on evergreen New Zealand natives and the garden’s beautiful setting means it has something to offer all year round.
