Eden Garden (Public)
Built in an old quarry in the centre of Auckland, Eden Garden sits on the side of Mount Eden, one of the many volcanic remnants within Auckland. Fifty-three years of garden passion has turned an abandoned wilderness into a memorial garden of great beauty and interest. Camellias form one of the main collections and there are many good specimens of hibiscus, bromeliads, conifers and deciduous trees. Vireya rhododendrons offer all year round colour in the garden. Varieties of perennial plants clothe the ground and complement the shrubby material – winter roses, hostas, ferns, clivias and Huechera.
Spring has become one of the most popular times to visit the garden and marvel at the spectacular display of tulips. Visitors stop for a coffee or lunch at the café followed by a walk up Hillary Heights to enjoy breathtaking views across Auckland and the Gulf. The summer perennial garden boasts many old-fashioned roses, as well as hollyhocks, day lilies, salvias and delphiniums.
Throughout the gardens many native New Zealand tress can be found. The topography of this garden adds greatly to the appeal of the gardens. Despite some steeper areas there is wheelchair access to the areas near the entrance of the gardens and adjacent sites.
