Tairoa Lodge

★★★★

Continuing the legacy of this garden, Linda and Steve Morrison are only the third family to own the property which was established in the late 1800s.  Isaac Bayly built the historic kauri homestead from timber milled in Northland which was barged to New Plymouth and arrived in Hāwera on the bullock wagon.  In 1902 the property passed to the Lovell family who were responsible for planting the mature trees that form the backbone of this property.  The most significant trees in the garden are a stand of protected kauri planted in 1939.  Rhododendrons, camellias, and hydrangeas are abundant on the property.  Giant bamboo act as a buffer between the property and the adjacent main road lining the curved driveway.

Perennials and roses surround Tairoa Cottage and Tairoa Church Hall which were moved on to the property in recent years providing a popular venue for weddings, events, private and corporate functions. Boutique accommodation is available at Tairoa Cottage. Underplanting of the mature trees has resulted in pathways meandering around the grounds. Protecting the existing landscape and plants has always been important. Soul and authenticity have gone into the evolution of this garden.

Tairoa Lodge garden is open during the Taranaki Garden Festival and by appointment. Website: https://www.tairoa-lodge.co.nz. Tairoa Church Hall cafe is open during the festival only. Artworks for sale.
