Orokonui Ecosanctuary

The magical Orokonui Ecosanctuary forest showcases rare plants, diverse forest types, 450 year old podocarps, 100 varities of flax and New Zeland's tallest tree.Nestled between the mountains of Mihiwaka and Mopanui, 20 minutes north of Dunedin, is a beautiful  307ha forest protected by a special pest exclusion fence.

The rich, biodiverse forest is thriving, flowering and fruiting prolifically in the absence of pests. A network of walking tracks to suit all abilities allows close encounters with flora and fauna not easily seen elsewhere in the South Island. Come and see New Zealand the way it was!

  • North

    From The Octagon, travel northwest, turn onto Stuart Rd

    Turn left onto SH1 (signs for Timaru/Route 1)

    Turn right at the 1st cross street onto St Andrew St (signs for Port Chalmers/Route 88)

    Turn left into Anzac Ave/State Highway 88 (signs for Route 88), continuing on Anzac Ave 1.5k

    At roundabout take the 2nd exit onto State Highway 88 for 10.4k

    Turn left into Wickliffe Tce, then slight left into Borlases Rd

    Turn sharp right into Blueskin Rd , travel 4.6k

    Turn left to stay on Blueskin Rd 1.4k to destination

    South

    Head southeast on Harvey St towards Pitt St 0.6k

    Continue onto Mount Cargill Rd 0.4k

    Continue straight onto Shortcut Rd for 1.4k

    Turn slight left road becomes Blueskin Rd for 3.9k - destination on your left.
