The New Zealand Gardens Trust provides you, the garden owner, with the opportunity to showcase your garden to the world.
The endorsement of RNZIH, and a thorough assessment process, provides your garden with credibility and a recognised brand to market. Many such brands operate within the tourism industry, so this will allow garden visitors to make informed decisions.
The website is another key tool in marketing your garden. It puts visitors in touch with gardens, providing necessary garden information, contact details, and maps.
You also become a member of an enthusiastic group of passionate gardeners, who share information and attend NZGT conferences. This pool of knowledge and resources can benefit you, your garden, and the open garden sector as a whole.
Garden of Significance / Garden of National Significance
Two assessors will visit your garden to undertake a formal critique, to determine if your garden meets the high standard required for endorsement as a Garden of Significance. Furthermore, re-inspection of a Garden of Significance occurs every three years to ensure that the high standards have been maintained. Registering as a Garden of Significance entitles you to have up to five photographs of your garden on the website.
To apply for Garden of Significance and annual subscription, which includes membership to the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture ($71.36)
Garden of Significance: $290.00 + GST ($333.50)
Garden of Significance with budget over $40,000: $390.00 + GST ($448.50)
Garden of Significance with budget over $80,000: $690.00 + GST ($793.50)
Garden of International Significance
Gardens of International Significance are those gardens who present a complete package in relation to design, plants and plantmanship, attention to detail, management and maintenance standards and safety. The story they present lifts them above those other great Gardens of National Significance. Gardens nominated for this category are chosen by the entire assessing team, and are then re-assessed every two years to ensure they maintain the highest standards.
The subscription rates for a Garden of International Significance are the same as those for a Garden of Significance (see above).
Registered Garden
Registering a garden with the NZGT costs $212.50 + GST ($244.37) which includes membership to the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture ($71.36). We require detailed information about your garden, which is verified by a site visit by one of our assessors. We re-inspect each Registered Garden every five years, to ensure that the information we have recorded and published, is still true and correct. See the RNZIH website for details of the benefits of belonging to this organisation.
Each Registered Garden has a web page featured on this site presenting information about the garden, including a photo if supplied.
