How We Assess Gardens

The NZGT has two categories of gardens:

  1. Registered Garden
  2. Garden of Significance

Registered Garden

These are gardens that have been visited by the NZGT to ensure that the information we publish on our website is true and correct.  You can be confident that the information on this website describes each garden accurately.

Some of our 'Registered Gardens' will surprise you with their quality and standard, with many excellent gardens listed under this category.

Garden of Significance

These gardens have been critically evaluated by two professional assessors. The assessors consider a range of factors before determining the final outcome.  These areas include (in broad terms):

  • Hard landscape and design
  • Plant material and use
  • Maintenance
  • Safety
  • Overall impression

The 'pass mark' has been set very high for these gardens, so the visitor should be in no doubt of their quality.  We believe that a Garden of Significance is up with the best in the world, and is a garden not to be missed if you get the opportunity.
