Description
It is just 10 minutes drive from Wellington's central business district to the five hectare Otari - Wiltons plant collections and 90 hectares of bush where you may find some of the mature podocarp bush that once covered much of the city. This unique plant sanctuary has this country's foremost collection of native plants including many rare and endangered species. It also has a pristine remnant of the original forest and an extensive network of walks to suit all ages and abilities where may be seen old rata, kowhai, rimu, tawa and other large trees and vines. There is a magnificent walkway through the tree tops, an alpine garden with mountain tarn and borders where plants are arranged to show off their distinctive beauty. Plants here come from the far reaches of New Zealand, from the sub Antarctic islands in the south to Cape Reinga and offshore Kermadec Islands in the north. There are approximately 1200 species, native hybrids and cultivars with more than 60 types of fern and collections include Hebe, Phormium, Pittosporum, Coprosma, Olearia, grasses and sedges. The curious divaricating plants are of special note as is the glade where distinctive Dracophyllum species (grass trees) are under planted with Chatham Island forget-me-nots (Myosotidium hortensisa )
