Oamaru Public Gardens

Description

When the town was surveyed in 1858, 34 acres were set aside as a public reserve; Oamaru Gardens opened on this site in 1876 making it one of the oldest in the country. The gardens have an air of maturity greatly enhanced by the plantings along the Oamaru Creek which meanders along its length. Colourful annuals are bedded out on the sweeping lawns and an immaculate rose garden is a centerpiece. There is much more of interest besides – a rhododendron dell and azalea lawn, a native fernery and an extensive planting of New Zealand natives, a Chinese garden linked to a distinctive red lacquer bridge over the creek, an aviary and peacock house and children’s play area. There are several ornaments of note. A handsome Italian marble (Carrara) fountain is on the lawn near the main entrance and a Wonderland statue created by a Scottish sculptor and gifted in 1926 are of special importance.
