Description

This public garden has an interesting history being designed by David Tannock in 1906 - the horticulturist largely responsible for the noted Dunedin Botanic Garden. This historic park preserves his rather formal layout and a venerable Wellingtonia and two horizontal elms from that time. When planted a number of trees and shrubs, including some conifers, were very rare and are now of considerable size and interest. In spring camellias, magnolias, Enkianthus, Stuartia, rhododendrons and the like are flowering. Tree and herbaceous peonies follow in early summer followed by an impressive display of modern roses and the white saucer shaped flowers of Chilean Eucryphias. In autumn many deciduous trees and shrubs turn on a good display while later hawthorns and rowans together with conifers and witch hazels provide winter colour.
