Description

From the elegant entrance gates on Gala Street an avenue of English beech and silver birch leads into the heart of this extensive park - all the major features can be explored from this impressive walkway. On the left the Jessie Calder Gardens shows a large gathering of old fashioned shrub roses while further on there is a dazzling display of modern roses - bush, standard and climbers. Queens Park has a significant collection of native plants and the azalea garden and rhododendron dell provides a good display into the early summer months. Herbaceous borders, a rock garden, a formal bog garden and a conservatory are also among further attractions. An authentic Japanese Garden is a recent addition. A superb aviary displays many native birds in flight that are seldom seen in captivity while at the adjacent Southland Museum the tuatara, New Zealand's living dinosaur, can be viewed at close quarters. Throughout Queens Park is enhanced by a variety of mature trees and shrubs and by fine bronze statuary. There are two excellent cafes.
