Description

This secluded waterfront garden is the legacy of retired whaler, Capt. Wm. Butler and the second owner Hubert Dacre. Present owners been in residence since 1972. A traditional cottage garden surrounds the old house (1840's) which is open to visit. It sits between the harbour edge and a bank of native bush. The planting in the main is sub-tropical.  Elsewhere is an old orchard adjacent to a grove of huge pohutukawa. Of particular note is a magnificent magnolia grandiflora and an equally old olive tree planted by Butler in the 1840's.  An early Pa site, with good signage, is a short walk away. Note that entry charge for groups of 10 is $10.00 per person.  Entry charge includes visit to Whaling Museum and Whaler's 1840 house which is still lived in.
